TAM – Total Addressable Market
Your total addressable market (or total available market) demonstrates your product’s potential. This number will show the highest number of customers, and therefore the highest revenue, that your business could see.
SAM – Serviceable Available Market
Your serviceable available market is the portion of TAM you may be able to acquire based on specified customer demographics. When determining SAM, you have to think about the customers you’re looking to reach right now. Are your demographics based on location, age, gender, occupation, or personal interests? Any or all of these are acceptable answers, but choosing a target demographic will limit your reach, hone your focus, and determine your SAM.
SOM – Serviceable Obtainable Market
This will be your smallest number. How much of the serviceable available market can you actually capture? To determine this, you have to look at the market you can obtain with your current resources vs. the market capture of your closest competitors. This will give you your SOM.
Investors will want to know these numbers so they can adequately evaluate risk. Make sure you can answer the following questions: Where will you start? (SOM) Where will you grow? (SAM) What is your company’s maximum potential? (TAM)
Tips When Calculating Market Size

Providing an accurate, detailed market size estimate shows that your company is a good investment—and that you’re willing to put in the time and effort to prove it. How to Calculate TAM, SAM, and SOM (Bottom-Up)
We know what TAM, SAM, and SOM are and why they are essential to a business plan. Now, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. How do you calculate TAM, SAM, and SOM?
If you have revenue, you can do a bottom-up calculation. This is the more accurate method, so if it’s possible to go this route, we recommend you do it.
Calculating TAM:
Take your previous sales information and determine your annual contract value. This is achieved by using the following equation:
# of current customers x average sales price = ACV
Once you know your ACV, you can use the number to determine your total addressable market using the following equation:
ACV x total # of potential sales avenues = TAM
You can simplify this equation further if you’re in the software or app development field. For example, if you are selling an app directly to a customer, you basically get to determine your ACV.
How might this look in a real-life scenario? Let’s say your idea is something in Ag tech, like an innovative new app for crop tracking. If you have thirty people in Omaha using the app on a subscription basis of $9.99/year, your ACV is:
30 x 9.99 = $299.70
Who else might be interested in the app? With technology like this, you could easily service the entire farming population of the United States. If there are 2 million farms in the U.S., then your TAM is 9.99 x 2,000,000 = $19,980,000.
Calculating SAM:
You can calculate your serviceable addressable market using the number you got for your total addressable market. Decide on your target audience, then use the following equation:
ACV x targeted segment of TAM = SAM
Since each state will have different regulations, crops, growing seasons, etc., you may choose to target just Nebraska farmers to start. If there are 44,800 farms in the state of Nebraska, your SAM would be 9.99 x 44,800 = $447,552.
Calculating SOM:
You can calculate your serviceable obtainable market using your SAM number. If you had the entire market in the palm of your hand, then the two numbers might be equal—but that rarely happens. SOM lets you and investors know your realistic market share.
The equation will look like this:
Last year’s share x this year’s SAM = SOM
So if your SAM for Omaha was $499.50 and your revenue was $299.70, your market share was 60%. If this year’s SAM (for the entire state of Nebraska) is $447,552, then your SOM would be .6 x 447,552 = $268,531.20.
If you don’t have revenue, you’ll do a top-down calculation.
How to Calculate TAM, SAM, and SOM (Top-Down)
Calculating TAM:
As we said, top-down TAM calculation requires a bit more market research, but It’s a tactic many new startups will need to use.
What is your total market size? If we stick with the crop tracking app idea, then the market size for the United States would be 2.01 million, according to the USDA (a reliable source).
What is your market sector? According to the 2019 Farm Production Expenditures Report, approximately 13.2% of crop farmers’ expenditures went toward farm services. Since this is a service app, we would lump the app into that market sector. If each crop farmer spends about $192,000 yearly on their farm, they will spend about $25,344 in that sector.
The equation is:
Market size x market sector = TAM
This would give you 2,010,000 x $25,344 = $50,941,440,000.
However, your TAM isn’t likely to be $50 billion. We recommend narrowing the market sector down further. How much do farmers spend on crop tracking? Unfortunately, studies don’t get that specific, so we’ll have to make an educated guess. Say every farmer uses some kind of crop management software. If fieldmargin was the most successful app in that space, and every farmer was using it, then they would be spending around $60 per year in this market sector.
If you could capture the entire market, then your TAM would be 2,010,000 x 60 = $120,600,000.
Calculating SAM:
Once you have your TAM, you can figure out your SAM. If your target market is farms in Nebraska, your market size drops from 2.01 million to 44,800.
Your calculation will be:
Target market x market sector = SAM
For our example, this would give you a SAM of 44,800 x 60 = $2,688,000.
Calculating SOM:
Again, without your own revenue, you must rely on market research. Let’s use fieldmargin as an example again to help determine your serviceable obtainable market.
In the Google Play store, the app has more than 100,000 downloads. Let’s assume it also has that many in the Apple Store. We know it services farms in 170 countries but is based in the UK. Let’s assume a quarter of their customers are in the UK, which has a little more than 200,000 farms. Their market share in the UK would be 25%.
(We’ve made a few assumptions here for the sake of time and simplicity. For example, fieldmargin serves both crop farmers and livestock farmers. When doing your own market research, these details should be more exact.)
If you believe your product will be as successful in your market sector, then your calculation would be:
Comparable market share x SAM = SOM
In this top-down model, your SOM would be .25 x 2,688,000 = $672,000.
One perk of this method is that it offers more information to help you decide on a price for your product. Obviously, a $9.99/year subscription fee for this type of app is a bit low. By performing your market research and recognizing that $60/year is on the low end of the spectrum, you could increase your SOM substantially.

Take your previous sales information and determine your annual contract value. This is achieved by using the following equation:
# of current customers x average sales price = ACV
Once you know your ACV, you can use the number to determine your total addressable market using the following equation:
ACV x total # of potential sales avenues = TAM
You can simplify this equation further if you’re in the software or app development field. For example, if you are selling an app directly to a customer, you basically get to determine your ACV.
How might this look in a real-life scenario? Let’s say your idea is something in Ag tech, like an innovative new app for crop tracking. If you have thirty people in Omaha using the app on a subscription basis of $9.99/year, your ACV is:
30 x 9.99 = $299.70
Who else might be interested in the app? With technology like this, you could easily service the entire farming population of the United States. If there are 2 million farms in the U.S., then your TAM is 9.99 x 2,000,000 = $19,980,000.
Calculating SAM:
You can calculate your serviceable addressable market using the number you got for your total addressable market. Decide on your target audience, then use the following equation:
ACV x targeted segment of TAM = SAM
Since each state will have different regulations, crops, growing seasons, etc., you may choose to target just Nebraska farmers to start. If there are 44,800 farms in the state of Nebraska, your SAM would be 9.99 x 44,800 = $447,552.
Calculating SOM:
You can calculate your serviceable obtainable market using your SAM number. If you had the entire market in the palm of your hand, then the two numbers might be equal—but that rarely happens. SOM lets you and investors know your realistic market share.
The equation will look like this:
Last year’s share x this year’s SAM = SOM
So if your SAM for Omaha was $499.50 and your revenue was $299.70, your market share was 60%. If this year’s SAM (for the entire state of Nebraska) is $447,552, then your SOM would be .6 x 447,552 = $268,531.20.
If you don’t have revenue, you’ll do a top-down calculation.
How to Calculate TAM, SAM, and SOM (Top-Down)
Calculating TAM:
As we said, top-down TAM calculation requires a bit more market research, but It’s a tactic many new startups will need to use.
What is your total market size? If we stick with the crop tracking app idea, then the market size for the United States would be 2.01 million, according to the USDA (a reliable source).
What is your market sector? According to the 2019 Farm Production Expenditures Report, approximately 13.2% of crop farmers’ expenditures went toward farm services. Since this is a service app, we would lump the app into that market sector. If each crop farmer spends about $192,000 yearly on their farm, they will spend about $25,344 in that sector.
The equation is:
Market size x market sector = TAM
This would give you 2,010,000 x $25,344 = $50,941,440,000.
However, your TAM isn’t likely to be $50 billion. We recommend narrowing the market sector down further. How much do farmers spend on crop tracking? Unfortunately, studies don’t get that specific, so we’ll have to make an educated guess. Say every farmer uses some kind of crop management software. If fieldmargin was the most successful app in that space, and every farmer was using it, then they would be spending around $60 per year in this market sector.
If you could capture the entire market, then your TAM would be 2,010,000 x 60 = $120,600,000.
Calculating SAM:
Once you have your TAM, you can figure out your SAM. If your target market is farms in Nebraska, your market size drops from 2.01 million to 44,800.
Your calculation will be:
Target market x market sector = SAM
For our example, this would give you a SAM of 44,800 x 60 = $2,688,000.
Calculating SOM:
Again, without your own revenue, you must rely on market research. Let’s use fieldmargin as an example again to help determine your serviceable obtainable market.
In the Google Play store, the app has more than 100,000 downloads. Let’s assume it also has that many in the Apple Store. We know it services farms in 170 countries but is based in the UK. Let’s assume a quarter of their customers are in the UK, which has a little more than 200,000 farms. Their market share in the UK would be 25%.
(We’ve made a few assumptions here for the sake of time and simplicity. For example, fieldmargin serves both crop farmers and livestock farmers. When doing your own market research, these details should be more exact.)
If you believe your product will be as successful in your market sector, then your calculation would be:
Comparable market share x SAM = SOM
In this top-down model, your SOM would be .25 x 2,688,000 = $672,000.
One perk of this method is that it offers more information to help you decide on a price for your product. Obviously, a $9.99/year subscription fee for this type of app is a bit low. By performing your market research and recognizing that $60/year is on the low end of the spectrum, you could increase your SOM substantially.
Estimate market size, even if TAM, SAM, and SOM seem overwhelming.
Nobody said founding a startup would be easy, and figuring out realistic numbers for your TAM, SAM, and SOM can start to feel overwhelming fast. However, these are an essential part of your business plan and will help you know where you stand in the competitive landscape and help convince investors that your startup company is something special.
